Do Black Women Matter to the Black Church?

In 2016, my colleague Lawrence Ware and I wrote a piece for Dissent Magazine, discussing whether or not the lives of Black women and children matter to the Black church in the aftermath of popular gospel artist James Fortune receiving his second domestic violence charge. As the Black community pushes for the acknowledgment that our lives do indeed matter, we must also make sure that we are evaluating the way we make these acknowledgments within our community as well.

"Award-winning gospel singer James Fortune’s recent conviction for domestic violence points to a larger problem of patriarchy within the black church."
